I built a game to help you learn and practice mental math - with xSniper: Free to play on itch.io

xSniper is a free browser game available now here: xSniper by Skillsmith Studios

I had the idea for xSniper over a year ago, while I was still struggling with the fundamentals of game development. I started building it in Unreal Engine with advanced lighting, detailed 3D models, and (most importantly) a lot of broken systems. No one wanted to download a free game from a studio they’ve never heard of, and I wasn’t even sure I wanted people playing it with how broken it all was.

In September 2026, I decided it was time to scrap it all and start from scratch. A new game engine, new assets, new systems. The only thing that was the same was the concept: a sniping game that forces the player to make rapid mental math calculations, rewarding answers that are close enough instead of forcing the exact right answer.

The game looked pretty bad at first. I just threw together some very low-detail assets in a free online sprite editor and started trying to just make it work. It also needed to run in the browser, so everything needed to stay simple to make that happen smoothly.

The goal here was to make the game feel good and be somewhat fun without going crazy with art or other tricks to make the player feel immersed. The rule I set for myself was to make 5 levels (I ended up doing 6) that had nice, natural progression between them before moving on to anything else. This rule is what finally allowed me to “finish” a game.

Now that I had the game working, and technically able to be considered a “completed” game, it was time to do the fun stuff… just make it all better one piece at a time. So I just did whatever came to mind. First some art improvements, then some UI enhancements, a tutorial, tweaks to the difficulty progression, and more art improvements.

The game still has a long way to go before I’m willing to consider this project completed, but I’m starting to at least feel somewhat proud of what I’ve built. As far as free browser games go, I think it’s worth a play. You might even find yourself getting better at quick mental math and have some fun in the process.
